Fleur Bake Shop, Whitefish, MT: January Cakery of the Month

By Carey Ide, Co-Founder, Celebration Stadium

Our family went skiing at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Montana last week and after five days of deep powder and sore thighs we headed down the mountain, in the local SNOW bus, to explore the small town of Whitefish.  With old-fashion Christmas decorations still roped across main street, we found a welcoming and classic ‘chill’ western town filled with locally owned businesses.  As we hiked down main street past ski shops, micro-breweries and art galleries, we decided to stop in at Fleur Bake Shop to warm up and have a little spontaneous surprise birthday celebration for my daughter.

Fleur Bake Shop is owned by pastry chef Whitney Brien whose passion is to create one-of-a-kind specialty cakes, delicate puff pastries and a variety of fresh breads.  Hence the name, Fleur, she enjoys decorating with edible fresh flowers and petals, herbs and greens.  A graduate of The French Pastry School, L’Art du Gateau, in Chicago, Illinois, she focuses on baking from scratch and using local seasonal ingredients.

The featured cake today was chocolate with local plum compote and rosemary buttercream.  Scrumptious!

I hid the small Celebration Stadium and candles in my backpack and set it up at the table while everyone was off choosing their favorite treat.  Because this candle holder is made of a strong light-weight aluminum, it travels well and the parts can be easily assembled on location.  My daughter felt very special and was so surprised!

The birthday girl chose the lemon meringue tartlet which had a dash of colorful lavender flower petals.  It was as beautiful as it was delicious.

It was obvious why The Whitefish Pilot newspaper awarded Fleur Bake Shop Best Bakery in town for the last three years.
